One Act Play Competition |

Region III
One Act Play Program
The running time of a one-act play is under 60 minutes; when typed in standard format (link to standard format here), a one-act play is approximately 15-45 pages in length; there is no intermission in a one-act play.
Up to six plays will be selected as finalists by readers outside the region and will be given staged readings at the Region III Festival.
In order to be selected a finalist for the KCACTF national John Cauble Short Play Award; a one-act must be invited to the regional festival as either a participating full production or for a staged reading. If selected as a finalist, you will be asked to send a copy of your script by email attachment to the Kennedy Center.
We encourage finalists to bring a rehearsed staged reading of the script(s) to the festival. However, if this proves impossible, finalists may be assigned a director and select a cast from those auditioning for the 10 Minute Play Festival on Wednesday afternoon. A staged reading of the one-act(s) will be held later at the festival. As a finalist, if you cannot attend the Region III festival your play(s) will still be eligible for the national John Cauble Short Play Awards Program provided they have each been given a reading in front of an audience at their home school or at the regional festival (either is acceptable).
Deadline:
Please submit an electronic copy of your work and the Entry Form which must include the Certification of Eligibility via e-mail attachment to sreynolds@wittenberg.edu. There is a limit of two plays per playwright. | STANDARDIZING
THE PLAYWRITING FORMAT
We want to convey our plays as clearly and as concisely to each
reader (actor, director, literary manager, artistic director) as
we can. To that end, standardizing our typing format will help allow
the reader’s eye to flow from character to character easily.
This format also helps the literary manager to gauge the time it
takes to perform the play. Using this standard, each page lasts
approximately one to one and one-half minutes. Therefore, a 60-page
play would last approximately 90 minutes. Here are some hints/rules
regarding formatting. See the example below.
1. Please use a point size of 12 and a readable font (we recommend
Times New Roman or Helvetica).
2. The names of characters should be capitalized and centered before
their lines (not along the left margin).
3. Dialogue should be justified along the left margin only (not
centered).
4. Stage directions should be placed between parentheses on a separate
line and indented at least one tab from the left margin. You may
decide to italicize these stage directions as well.
5. There should be a double space between each character’s
lines.
EXAMPLE:
NANCY
Did I tell you that I saw John last night? Well, I did, and it
was…Well....
(NANCY pulls out a gun from her bag.)
I thought I’d better protect myself.
LUCY
Nancy, a gun is serious business!
NANCY
Don’t you think I know it? And he had that Susan woman
with him.
(LUCY turns her back on NANCY and stifles a smile.)
LUCY
Oh, you mean that redhead he brought with him to Joseph’s?
NANCY
Yeah, that same one.
